Think you know what an accordion sounds like? Think again.
San Francisco’s legendary accordion-rockers Those Darn Accordions are ready to rock Nevada City when they take the stage at the historic Nevada Theatre on Friday, October 9.
Fronted by singer, songwriter and accordionist Paul Rogers, Those Darn Accordions have spent decades proving that the accordion can be much more than a polka instrument. With four accordion players up front, backed by bass and drums, the band delivers a wild mix of rock, funk, ska, country, polka and straight-ahead good-time music—with plenty of humor and showmanship thrown in.
The result is a live show unlike anything else on the musical landscape: six musicians creating a surprisingly big, driving sound while four accordions trade riffs, melodies and musical punches across the front of the stage.
Those Darn Accordions aren’t newcomers to the national stage. The band has appeared on The American Music Awards with Drew Carey, Good Morning America, MTV Rock N’ Jock, Donny & Marie, Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular and other television programs. Their music and antics have also been featured in Time, People and Entertainment Weekly.
But at the heart of Those Darn Accordions is a simple idea: accordions are cool—and they can rock.
“People have a certain idea of what an accordion band is supposed to sound like,” says Rogers. “Then we hit them with four accordions, bass and drums.”
The band’s Nevada City appearance brings its famously energetic live show to one of Northern California’s most historic venues. The Nevada Theatre, dating to 1865, provides a fitting setting for a band that has spent years taking something old-fashioned and turning it completely upside down.
