MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY ACTIVITIES IN NEVADA CITY:
MLK COMMUNITY CHOIR AND A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION
A Martin Luther King Community Choir concert and “Remembering Marting Luther King Jr: A Community Conversation” are two free events celebrating King’s legacy in Nevada City on Monday, January 19. The MLK Community Choir performs from noon to 2 pm at the Nevada Theater, 401 Broad Street. The community conversation is from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Nevada City United Methodist Church, 433 Broad Street.
The concert is titled, “Building Community and Uniting a Nation in a Non-Violent Way.” Stan Thomas-Rose, who leads the choir, brings back the traditional program led by Zenobia Brokenbrough and the Bethel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Choir for forty years in Nevada City. The Bethel AME Choir joins about 50 local singers in seeking to celebrate and strengthen our community and our nation, while bringing everyone together through music.
The program includes speakers and poetry as well as singalongs led by local musicians, patriotic songs, hymns, spirituals, gospel songs, and an original song that is the choir’s traditional closing. Thomas-Rose notes that, “Individuals and families are invited to join the choir as we seek to remember our great legacy, and walk together into ‘that shining city on a hill.’”
Just up the street from the concert, at the Methodist Church, “Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr: A Community Conversation,” is offered by Creating Communities Beyond Bias and Color Me Human, two area non-profits. A series of small group discussions will focus on King’s message as well as racism, justice, and equality. Participants will be encouraged to think of some action they can do to create justice, compassion, or equality on the community.
The two organizations have produced many Martin Luther King Day events in the Nevada City-Grass Valley area over the past years.
