Mark Twain In Love
by Lynne Kaufman
Samuel Clemens conjures the spirit of his beloved wife Livy as he confronts the tragic elements of his life as Mark Twain and learns again how humor can make sense of it all.
Mark Twain in Love is a staged reading featuring award-winning Bay Area actor Lorri Holt (Colette Uncensored, Who Killed Sylvia Plath). The legendary Chris LeGate joins the cast as Mark Twain. Directed by the inimitable Sands Hall. Post-show discussion with the playwright et al following Sunday’s matinee.
Lorri Holt was a leading actor in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly four decades before moving to Nevada City in 2020. She now performs her two acclaimed solo shows, Colette Uncensored (co-written with Zack Rogow) and Who Killed Sylvia Plath? (by Mark Twain in Love author Lynne Kaufman) at venues around the country as well as London and Jakarta. Colette Uncensored has now been translated into four languages. Lorri has also published essays and award-winning short stories, and is a voiceover artist and audiobook narrator.
Chris LeGate has been portraying Mark Twain in a one man show for over three decades. He’s quite gratified to have some company this time. His favorite part of the presentation is a Q&A, during which, regardless of staying in character, he’ll be expected to stick to the truth. Mainly.
Sands Hall’s work in theatre includes an extensive acting resume and the plays she’s directed run the gamut from classical to contemporary. She’s also a playwright; local audiences may have enjoyed FAIR USE, which tackles the scandal surrounding Wallace Stegner’s plagiarism of the work of Mary Hallock Foote. The author of award-winning fiction and memoir, Sands is also a singer/songwriter and a teacher. www.sandshall.com
